How to make a reindeer face snack plate with children
Updated 30 October 2026 · By Rob and Chris, two Sheffield dads, and our families
A grown-up cuts up fruit or soft vegetables, and children arrange the pieces on a plate as a reindeer face with eyes, a nose and antlers. Then everyone sits down and eats their reindeer together.
- Time: about 15 minutes
- Ages: 3 and up, with a part for each age
- In the Famoo calendar as: Reindeer face snack plate
What do you need?
- A plate for each child
- Fruit, or soft or cooked vegetables, that your family already eats
- A knife and chopping board (for the grown-up)
How do you do it?
- Choose the food. A grown-up picks foods everyone can eat and checks for allergies.
- Prepare the pieces. The grown-up washes the food and cuts it into pieces that are safe for each child to eat.
- Make the face. Arrange a face shape, two eyes and a nose on the plate.
- Add antlers. Use more pieces for antlers or a festive border. A simple pattern is fine too.
- Eat together. Sit down and eat together. Tell everyone what your reindeer is called.
How can each age join in?
- Ages 3 to 5. Arrange pieces a grown-up has cut into a simple face.
- Ages 6 to 9. Design a more detailed face and help choose the food.
- Ages 10 and up. Design the layout and write the list of foods. The grown-up still does the cutting.
Tip
Got a fussy eater? Make the nose from a food they already like, and try something new as a small part, like one eye.
Keeping it safe
Children sit down to eat. The NHS says to think about size, shape and texture when preparing a child’s food, to avoid choking. NHS South Yorkshire’s Healthier Together advice is to cut grapes lengthways and cut food into batons, not balls.
