How to make a reindeer face snack plate with children

A grown-up cuts up fruit or soft vegetables, and children arrange the pieces on a plate as a reindeer face with eyes, a nose and antlers. Then everyone sits down and eats their reindeer together.

Mira and Famoo make a reindeer face on a plate from banana slices, carrot sticks for antlers and a strawberry nose, with bowls of ready-cut fruit and carrots on a low table.

What do you need?

How do you do it?

  1. Choose the food. A grown-up picks foods everyone can eat and checks for allergies.
  2. Prepare the pieces. The grown-up washes the food and cuts it into pieces that are safe for each child to eat.
  3. Make the face. Arrange a face shape, two eyes and a nose on the plate.
  4. Add antlers. Use more pieces for antlers or a festive border. A simple pattern is fine too.
  5. Eat together. Sit down and eat together. Tell everyone what your reindeer is called.

How can each age join in?

Tip

Got a fussy eater? Make the nose from a food they already like, and try something new as a small part, like one eye.

Keeping it safe

Children sit down to eat. The NHS says to think about size, shape and texture when preparing a child’s food, to avoid choking. NHS South Yorkshire’s Healthier Together advice is to cut grapes lengthways and cut food into batons, not balls.
